The Power of Thoughts

February 3, 2011

Once you understand what you want, ask for it. You will be surprised at what you get. Oprah learned this first lesson when she read the book, “The Color Purple.” She thought, breathed and obsessed over this book and wanted to be part of the movie. This changed her life forever.

ShakePoverty.org Mission and Goals

April 13, 2010

I am currently serving on the board of a non-profit start-up called ShakePoverty.

In October of 2009 I was giving a lecture to some entrepreneurs and business students at Ohio Wesleyan University. After the lecture, a young senior came up to me named Farooq Busari and wanted to get my thoughts on his idea of starting a non-profit. I thought the idea was brilliant and the rest is history.

On October 28, 2009, Farooq Busari set a goal to meet each of the 1850 students on Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) campus; shake their hand, and photograph each handshake. Farooq’s mission was to unite his entire campus by inspiring each student to support the Millennium Development Goals to eradicate poverty by 2025.

Within a week Farooq and fellow student Hung Nguyen photographed 700 handshakes and went on to unite 1850 students, faculty and staff members of the campus community to support the end of extreme poverty. A 20 foot mosaic mural displaying each handshake was constructed in the center of OWU campus. Through donations and sale of merchandise, Shakepoverty Foundation works to lifts impoverished villages out of extreme poverty.

The mission of Shakepoverty Foundation is to shake poverty from the world by supporting the Millennium Promise and its flagship initiative the Millennium Village Project. The unique and innovative grass roots movement inspires people by showing them that their handshake commitment and purchase of Shakepoverty merchandise is important in our goal to end poverty.

“Poverty can be ended not by a handful of people but with millions of handshakes.”

I am honored to be part of this World changing idea. If you would like to help, please join the Facebook Group, Donate, or purchase some ShakePoverty Merchandise.
